In April our PVS girls were offered the opportunity to be part of the University of Western Australia’s emerging engineers’ program. This program is run to engage girls in the field of engineering and more broadly STEM. Five of our students took up the challenge and have been working hard over the last two terms in finding a solution to biofouling. I am extremely proud of the girls, as with all things this program was disrupted by COVID-19, the girls have shown a great deal of resilience and perseverance during this time. They have conducted research independently and communicated with each other online to come up with a solution. The girls have been busy testing their solution and we are hoping for some positive results. Our emerging engineers will be finalising their presentation and presenting to a panel of judges at UWA soon. I would like to congratulate the girls as they are one of the youngest teams involved and this has been a very challenging project, one I think secondary students would struggle with. The girls have developed an innovative solution to biofouling which hopefully will help the scientists involved in finding a solution to this multibillion-dollar problem.
