Excellence in education
Mathematics
At Pioneer Village School mathematics is a priority area.
The application of mathematics in our everyday lives – particularly with the increase in use of technology – has made effective teaching of mathematics critical. We teach our students to investigate, represent and interpret mathematical situations. Students are also taught to develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, and to pose, solve problems, and reason.
Knowledge and skills in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability are taught through highly engaging games, hands-on activities, modeled tasks, collaborative and independent work, and ICT. Skills in fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem solving are also developed.
Teachers and administration staff have attended professional learning to assist in establishing whole school approaches in mathematics. A repertoire of evidence-based strategies to assist students in attaining developmental milestones have been identified, with many of these strategies being recommended by Dr Paul Swan and the First Steps in Mathematics Program.
